It has been a busy year for our Community Engagement Committee (CEC). Each year, our team organizes a number of community engagement programs with the DC metro area– that includes service projects, speaking engagements, hosting events, and charity drives.
So what happened in 2017? For the first time ever, we teamed up with On-Ramps to Careers to employ 4 high school students for a 6 week summer internship. While in office, they received hands-on education about the digital media industry. They worked closely with our engineering and design teams to complete projects for their personal portfolios. They even took home their own laptops to continue learning on their own. After the internship ended, stand-out students came in monthly for further professional development sessions where we talked college applications, time management, job-hunting, and much more.
We designated a quarter of our budget to fuel non-profit organizations that were doing stellar work in the community (shout out to Fair Girls, ProjectCSGirls, Byte Back, and the Offender Aid Restoration!). Another quarter was spent sponsoring events for community initiatives that pushed for more diversity and knowledge sharing in tech. In sponsoring and aiding events like Refresh DC, Ela Conf, DC Design Week, Tech Lady Hackathon, Code for DC and more, we aim to bring communities together around one common cause – to make DC a more inclusive and innovative place.
Internally, we offered pro bono workshops for small businesses (ISL SkillShares), we invited 3 international rockstars to our office to spend the day learning about the technology field with TechGirls, and we’ve continued our company-wide Service Week project by volunteering with Martha’s Table. We had the privilege of contributing to Fair Girls and OAR through donation drives held throughout the year. Oh yeah, and we hosted over 85 events in our office space during 2017 alone. We’ve been busy. Here’s to hoping next year will be even better. ?
