Several years ago, DoubleTree Hotels first approached ISL to redesign Home & Away, their app that serves as the ultimate concierge for business travelers staying at DoubleTree properties.
After a successful deployment of their new app, we were reenlisted to redesign and relaunch the next iteration of the app — keeping recent iOS updates in mind. After a round of design research and user testing, we completely overhauled the application with added functionality and a greatly improved user experience; all while keeping true to the vision of making people feel at home, no matter where in the world they are staying.
Our first version of DoubleTree’s Home&Away app was created during the skeuomorphic era, making it extremely image heavy — over 300mb; making it hard for users to download, especially over 4G. We also knew that the map, the app’s primary and highest trafficked feature, needed to be simplified and re-envisioned.
During the redesign we removed the wood texture and skeuomorphic buttons in favor of a minimally-styled side and top nav, and added a variety of slick animations to enhance the quality of user’s interactions.
We wanted the iconography for the app to be immediately recognizable and familiar to aid the user in finding what they’re looking for. The categories are also color coded to add visual clarity.
The new interface’s primary focus is the map itself, with a sliding favorites bar along that allows users to easily find specific brands/stores based on their location. In order to ensure that users get the most out of their in-app experience, a one-time interface hint pops up to guide the user through their first interactions in the app. They can tap the bubble to be walked through the action, or perform the action on their own to get rid of the cue.

By reducing the size of the application by a factor of ten, ISL was able to deliver an updated product that wasn’t just beautiful and user friendly, but served as a practical addition to any DoubleTree guest’s tablet.
By undergoing rigorous user testing (both quantitative and qualitative) we were able to surface and execute against a variety of user stories, as well as create solutions for real business goals. The final result was an app that faster, lighter and all around more useful. And sure to make you feel at home — even on the road.
